Yesterday Melissa and I were reading an article from Thomas S. Monson in which he said
"We can’t direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails." Melissa did not realize how soon she would need to apply this message.
This morning she woke up with some sporadic contractions. They were coming in uneven waves of two and she was not sure they were full contractions but maybe just Brakstin Hicks. I was about to leave for class at 9 when they turned really hard and she gave the green light for going to the hospital. We sent Calvin and Simon over to our wonderful nieghbor Amanda Bennion, called my mom to come up to Logan and headed for the hospital.
At check-in, Melissa was at a 5 and all vitals were good. The contractions were coming now in regular waves of two. The first contraction was the hardest and then the follow up contraction was a bit lighter. They had to run some blood work before she could get a go ahead on getting an epidural. Her plan was to get one until when they checked her after an hour and the contractions were getting really painful. She had jumped to a 10 and was ready to push. There was no time to get an epidural and she realized that she would need to go natural. As the next contraction hit she focused on a point in the room adjusted her sails and said "I can do this!"
The doctor (Horsely) came in just in time. She pushed for maybe 10 min and we were blessed with the arrival of our new baby boy. It was an intense hour with her progressing and delivering so fast.
I am so amazed at her strength, courage and determination. I am the luckiest husband in the whole world. So without further ado I present the New Guy. I call him the New Guy because we are still trying to decide between Zachary and Levi.
New Guy: 7 lbs 1 oz, 19.5 inches long, born January 10, 2012 at 10:54 am.
As the father of this little growing family, thank you for all of the support from friends and family. We are truly blessed beyond measure with our cup running over.
